Biography

Dr. Ngoc Nguyen, MD, completed medical school at the University of Washington in Seattle in 1999. He completed the internship training program at the University of California San Diego in family medicine in 2000 and residency training program at the University of California San Francisco in family practice in June 2002. He further completed a six-month fellowship training in rural medicine at the University of Washington in Tacoma, Washington. Dr. Nguyen began practicing medicine in 2002.

He grew up under the suppressive Communist Vietnam and left on a boat to freedom without any of his family members at the age of 16. After several failed escape attempts, getting caught and imprisoned two times, he finally succeeded on his last attempt in 1986. Though it took seven days at sea for his small boat of 69 people to land at a refugee camp in Indonesia, he stayed at the refugee camp for a year before he came to Tacoma in Washington State under the sponsorship of the Catholic Community Service and was placed in a foster family. Unfortunately, he had to move from foster family to foster family several times and change several different high schools during the process. Despite the difficulty of starting life in a new country with an unfamiliar culture and not knowing any English, Dr. Nguyen continued to thrive academically, thanks to the opportunities given to him in the United States. He and his family finally left rainy Washington and moved to sunny San Marcos, California in 2019. He enjoys the lovely warm weather here in Southern California and all the outdoor activities with his wife and two loving toddler children.

"For me, it is a privilege to serve and share patients' life stories and experiences. I came from a poor social economic and medically underserved background. In fact, I never saw a doctor until I landed at the refugee camp. I still remember I was given a little red vitamin C pill the moment I got my feet on dry land. That was my first encounter to a medical provider.  I always feel very fortunate to be here in the United States, as medical care is so readily available everywhere. Having lived and traveled to places with severe shortness of medical care or having no medical care at all, I understand the importance of providing my patients the best care I can give. Tragically, my own sister lost her life at the age of 20 due to the lack of medical care. I was 13 years old at that time and ever since then, I wanted to become a doctor, as I do not ever want any needless loss of life due to the lack of healthcare access."
